Internships

The Empty Space offers both Summer Internships (June through August) and Season Internships (September through May) in the following areas:
MARKETING
DEVELOPMENT
PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT
STAGE MANAGEMENT
AUDIENCE SERVICES MANAGEMENT

Applications are accepted throughout the year.
However, to be considered for a full- season position, applicants are encouraged to apply before September 1st.

Interns are highly valued members of our company. We have a small full-time professional staff and rely heavily on our interns. We trust interns with significant responsibilities in each department in the belief that it's an extremely valuable way to learn the practice of theater. That being said, we sadly report that internships are often unpaid, and we are unable to provide housing.Interns are expected to work approximately 20 hours/week; schedules are decided individually with department heads. If you are interested in applying, please send a resume along with a cover letter which inludes the following information:
  • What are your career goals?
  • What are your goals for an internship with The Empty Space
  • In which department are you interested in interning? (You can list more than one; we are often able to design an internship that allows an intern to work in more than one department.)
  • Are you interested in a Summer Internship or a Season Internship?

All internship inquiries should be mailed to:

Intern Job Descriptions

Marketing
The Marketing Intern will assist in all aspects of communication with the media, Empty Space audiences, and the general public: generating story ideas, drafting news releases, designing direct mail pieces, writing program articles, creating displays, handling bulk mailings, updating mailing lists, assisting at photo shoots, monitoring the theater website, maintaining publicity files and archives, and generally helping develop and carry out creative low-cost plans to reach new audiences. Depending on the intern’s interests and aptitudes, s/he may also be given lead responsibility for a particular short-term campaign or project. Experience in desktop publishing and/or computer graphics is highly desirable.

Development
The Development Intern will assist in the theater’s fundraising efforts, including grants research, grant writing, budgeting and formal grant evaluations. The Development Intern will also help to manage individual giving, including solicitation, acknowledgement and donor database maintenance. S/he will assist with invitations, procurement and execution of our annual benefit. This intern will attend monthly meetings of The Empty Space Board of Directors and the Development Committee. These meetings provide a unique opportunity to gain better understanding of the governing procedures of non-profits. Special projects to be organized with and for the Board of Directors will be a key part of this learning experience.
